Wells Are Different on the Rim — And We Know Why
Payson doesn't sit on a tidy sand aquifer. The Rim Country draws its groundwater from fractured granite — water stored in crushed fault zones running through hard Proterozoic rock beneath the Mogollon Rim. In rock like this, yield follows the fractures: one well hits a productive fault zone, while a neighbor a few hundred feet away struggles. Siting, drilling, and pump sizing all have to respect that reality, and crews that treat the Rim like flatland basin drilling get it wrong.
The other thing to know: the C.C. Cragin pipeline only reaches the Town of Payson's water system. Since 2019 the town has blended surface water into its municipal supply — but that pipeline stops at the service-area line. Pine and Strawberry's district has restricted new connections, pushing new construction onto private wells, and Star Valley's outskirts, Christopher Creek, Tonto Basin, and the East Verde communities all run on groundwater, full stop. If you're outside the town line, your well is your water utility — and keeping it healthy is our whole job.

Is Payson on city water or well water?
Inside the town limits, most homes are on the Town of Payson municipal system, which has blended groundwater from town wells with C.C. Cragin surface water since 2019. Step outside the town line — Star Valley outskirts, Pine, Strawberry, Christopher Creek, Tonto Basin, the communities along the East Verde — and there's no Cragin pipeline. Those properties run on private wells, shared wells, or small local water companies.
How deep are water wells around Payson?
There's no single "normal" depth here, because the Rim Country sits on fractured granite rather than a uniform sand aquifer. Water lives in fault and fracture zones, so two wells a few hundred feet apart can behave completely differently. Statewide industry guides put many Arizona residential wells in the several-hundred-foot range, but around Payson the honest answer starts with a site assessment, not a number. Do I need a permit to drill a well in Arizona?
Yes. Before any well is drilled, deepened, or modified, a Notice of Intent to Drill (Form 55-40) must be filed with the Arizona Department of Water Resources, and the work must be done by a licensed Arizona well driller. ADWR has up to 15 days to review the filing, and an approved NOI is valid for one year. We handle this paperwork for every well we drill.
My well suddenly has no water. What should I do first?
Check your breaker panel first — a tripped double-pole breaker is the most common harmless cause. If power is fine, don't keep cycling the pump; running a submersible pump dry can destroy the motor. Then call us at (928) 427-2164 and describe what happened. Most no-water calls trace to a failed pressure switch, a waterlogged pressure tank, or a worn pump — and most are fixable the same day.
